Biotechnology research is diverse, including cell and tissue engineering, drug delivery, genomics and metagenomics, directed evolution, environmental and agricultural microbiology, gene therapy, pathogen exchange, immunology and synthetic biology. From the perspective of biotechnology, most of these research directions focus on developing new technologies of biochemical processing and materials with commercial feasibility. Guangyi opened the major of biotechnology and food engineering in 2017, following the professional setting of Israel Institute of Technology. This major is one of the few interdisciplinary majors in the world that combines biotechnology and food engineering, and is committed to providing high-level talents for biotechnology and food industry. The specialty combines biological science with food science and engineering, and carries out teaching and research activities on an interdisciplinary basis.
In 2018, the professional supporting discipline "Food Science and Engineering" was selected as the list of key construction disciplines in the "Strengthening and Strengthening" promotion plan of higher education. With the strong support of the construction plan of high-level universities in Guangdong Province, the development of food science and engineering has been significantly improved, and at the same time, the teaching resources of biotechnology specialty have been promoted. In the first three semesters of professional study, all undergraduates must complete the basic courses of science and engineering, focusing mainly on mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Since then, interdisciplinary education has been offered, including food engineering, biochemistry, nutrition, molecular biology, biotechnology and entrepreneurship.
